Centuries of History
South Hook is located at the mouth of Milford Haven. Throughout the centuries, this has been a strategic defensive site.

|
Several Victorian military forts can be found in the area. The most important, and best preserved of these is South Hook Fort, which was built between 1859 and 1865. The fort consists of a horseshoe-shaped barrack building, set back from a seaward facing 20-gun battery.
Archaeological artefacts
During the site preparation stage of the project, a programme of archaeological recording was conducted. Its aim was to provide a visual record of any significant finds, and to provide information that may enhance regional historical records.

A site archaeological archive has been developed, consisting of records relating to the evaluation, including written records, photographs, drawings and artefacts. The archaeological contractor has ensured that the archive is fully catalogued, indexed, cross-referenced and checked for consistency
Evidence of prehistoric settlements on the site during two different historical periods have been discovered.
Bronze Age
A pottery urn, and evidence for a roundhouse, both dating to 1800 BC and 1500 BC were found on the South Hook LNG site.
The recovery of charcoal, charred hazelnuts, and flint tool making debris may well indicate even earlier occupation - dating back 4000 years.
Early medieval
Evidence of an huge agricultural complex was found on site, comprising of several corn drying kilns and iron smelting furnaces dating back to between AD650 and AD840.
