A complex process takes natural gas from its source in the gasfields to the end user. Essentially these are:
Gasfields
Natural gas is produced in subsurface gas reservoirs and reached through drilling.
Gas Treatment and Liquefaction
The natural gas is piped from the gasfield to a processing plant where it is cleaned from impurities and turned into a liquid by cooling it to a temperature of minus 160°C.
This liquid is then stored at subzero temperatures in specially insulated storage tanks.
Shipping LNG
When LNG is transported by sea it is pumped as a liquid into double-hulled ships specifically designed to handle the low temperature of LNG.
These carriers are insulated to limit the amount of LNG that evaporates.
LNG Regasification
LNG is stored in insulated onshore tanks. When natural gas is needed, the LNG is warmed to a point where it reverts to its gaseous state.

What is LNG?
Natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel. It produces fewer emissions and pollutants than either coal or oil.

LNG Tankers
Safe transportation of LNG is paramount, therefore the tankers that transport it are double-hulled, and specifically designed to handle the low temperature of LNG.

LNG Source
The LNG arriving at South Hook's terminal in west Wales will be transported from Qatar's North Field gas reserve in the Arabian Gulf.
