Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) - clean and reliable energy
Natural gas is a clean burning, safe, and environmentally-friendly fuel.
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is natural gas which has been converted to a liquid by cooling it to a temperature of minus 160°C.

In its liquid form, it occupies about 600 times less space than as a gas - and can therefore be easily stored in tanks, or pumped into ships and transported across the seas.

This volume reduction permits cost effective transportation of LNG over long distances.

LNG is:

  • Colourless
  • Odourless
  • Non-corrosive
  • Non-toxic
  • As the UK's domestic sources of natural gas decline, imported LNG will become an increasingly important source of clean and reliable energy.

LNG is stored in single and double-walled tanks with extremely efficient insulation. It can be quickly and easily turned back into natural gas and delivered to the UK's homes via the national grid pipeline.

    LNG Source
The LNG arriving at South Hook's terminal in West Wales will be transported from Qatar's North Field gas reserve in the Arabian Gulf.

    LNG Process
A complex process takes natural gas from its source in the gasfields to the end user. Essentially, these are: Gasfields, Gas Treatment and Liquefaction, Shipping LNG & LNG Regasification.

    LNG Tankers
Safe transportation of LNG is paramount, therefore the tankers that transport it are double-hulled, and specifically designed to handle the low temperature of LNG.
